Acid Rain

Hello everyone let us discuss some interesting facts about the Acid rain which we get often during these days. Acid rain is any form of precipitation- rain, snow, sleet, fog- which consists of a high level of acid. The acid rain contains the dilute solutions of two strong acids. They are Sulphuric acid and Nitric acid. The Acid rain has the following compositions of acids: 70 % of Sulphuric acid- this is derived from oxidation and hydrolysis of Sulphur di oxide and Hydrogen Sulphide.30% of water from various Nitric acid and other compounds. Clean dry air is composed of 78% of Nitrogen, 21% of Oxygen, 0.93% of Argon, 0.03 % of Carbon monoxide and other particles. There are five main air pollutant particles which in turn mix with the water vapour and produces Acid rain. They are Carbon monoxide, Sulphur oxides, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and other particles such as liquid and solid form of industrial dusts ash and spray. The major sources from these are derived from automobile industries, electric power plants etc.Complex reactions occur between these contaminants and water vapour which leaves to the formation of acid rain which contains carbonic acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid etc. This leads to the formation of acid rain which is now recognised as one of the most serious environmental factors. The most acidic rainfall is recorded in the U.S to date is 1.4 in West Virginia which is not above the acidity of battery which ahs the pH as 1. In India, the lowest natural rain fall is pH of 3.5. This was recorded in chembur in Mumbai and indraprasth in delhi. Acid rain creates a complex problem which has a higher impact in affecting human life. Acid rain will cause direct damage to die when the pH is less than 5. The aerosol of acid rain can cause respiratory disorders in human beings. If the drinking water is drawn from ponds and lakes, then the aluminium leaching is likely to post dangers which means the aluminium contents in the water affects the human body which leads to kidney failure and bone softening. The copper contents in water which is drawn from water pipes containing acid rain water can cause diarrhoea in children.
